Seal with ivory handle in the form of a hand bearing a torch

Silver, cast; ivory, carved
Inscribed in Hebrew: "Every man's signature is in it" [taken from the mussaf service for Rosh Hashanah: Unetane Tokkef - "We will express the mighty holiness of this day..." It is based on the Midrash on Job 7:37: "It is as a sign on every man's hand, that all men may know His doings" (Midrash Sifrei: Deuteronomy 307 et al] ; "[5]635 [1875] Asher Baer"; the seal cast, with Latin initials "J.H.G." in the body of the letters, in tiny Latin print, "Joseph Hirsch Goldberg".
