Phylactery (Tefillin) case (one of a pair), decorated with lions, gazelle, and eagles

Silver, cast, pierced and partly gilt
Inscribed in Hebrew: the letters "shin" and "yud" - initials of Shel Yad (for the hand); "There are wings of a dove sheathed in silver, its pinions in fine gold" (Psalms 68:14); "Swift as a gazelle, and strong as a lion, to do the will of your Father who is in Heaven" (Ethics of the Fathers V:23); "And all the peoples of the earth shall see that the Lord's name is proclaimed over you" (Deuteronomy 28:10). The cases are containers for storing the parchment sheets inscribed with verses from Exodus 13:1–10,11–16, and from Deuteronomy 6:4–9, 11, 13–21
