Gabriel Cohen, Israeli, born France, 1933-2017
Gabriel Cohen was born in 1933, the sixth of the 11 children of Rivka and Yitzhak Cohen, who emigrated from Eretz Israel to France. His father, who was of Persian origin, practiced Kabbalah. During World War II, the family hid in the area of Brittany. In 1949 the family returned to Israel. At first they lived in an immigrants' camp in Pardes Hannah and later settled in Jerusalem. Cohen worked at various professions, including diamond polishing. Having begun painting and sculpturing in his youth, in 1972 Cohen began painting again while working as a night watchman. In 1974 he exhibited for the first time a solo exhibition at the Debel Gallery in Jerusalem. His work was successful as a naïve art. Since the 1980s, Cohen has rarely exhibited his work. In the 2000s, in a state of poor mental and physical health, Cohen was hospitalized in a Jerusalem old age home.
Cohen's work has been identified with naive painting. His paintings depict fantastic landscapes, portraits and biographical themes. His paintings are characterized by an expanse of space and a multiplicity of images, depicted in a decorative approach. Among his well-known works is the triptych Jerusalem (1973).
