The Debel Gallery, art gallery active in Ein Kerem, Jerusalem between the years of 1973 and 1990.
The Debel Gallery was opened by Etienne and Ruth Debel in the basement of their home in Ein Kerem. It mounted exhibitions of works by well-known artists and new ones alike. It was active in Jerusalem from 1973-1990, during which it held about 200 exhibitions of both Israeli and foreign artists and was considered a cultural landmark in Jerusalem. The importance of the gallery lay in the fact that in addition to exhibiting known artists, the Gallery promoted a group of artists who were considered to be on the "fringe" at the time.
In addition, the Gallery promoted avant-garde artists, which was unusual for a private gallery at the time; for example, in 1974 the Austrian artist Rudolf Schwarzkogler had an exhibition, and in 1976 the Gallery staged a performance of "Nidah" by Yocheved Weinfeld.
Among the artists exhibited were the Israeli artists Yair Garbuz, Raffi Lavie, Gabriel Cohen, Yocheved Weinfeld, Maya Cohen-Levy, Daniela Passal; internationally famous artists such as Alexander Calder, David Hockney and many others, while at the same time it promoted artists who were then considered to be on the "fringe." Alongside these artists, it displayed artists identified with Bezalel, such as Zeev Raban, Meir Gur-Arieh, and Shmuel Levi; and figurative artists such as Samuel Bak and Naftali Bezem. There was also a group of new immigrants from the USSR who were promoted by the Debel Gallery, among them Alexander Okun, Valentin Shorr, Anatoli Basin, and many others.
Today the Debel Gallery Archive is housed within the Information Center for Israeli Art at the Israel Museum, Jerusalem.
