Herz Frank, Israeli, born Latvia, 1926–2013
Herz Frank was born in Ludza, Latvia (at that time part of the Soviet Union) in 1926. His father was a photographer and owner of a photography studio, and so he was able send Herz to a Jewish school for his education. During WWII he served as an officer in the army. After finishing law school in Moscow, he worked, from 1952, in journalism and publishing. In 1959 he began to work in the photography studios of Riga, first as a stills photographer, then as a film director and photographer. In 1992 he made Aliyah to Israel and settled in Jerusalem.
Frank was among the founders of the “poetic documentary school of film of Riga.” The films he created, and filmed in black and white, depicted the entire spectrum of human emotions, while emphasizing the existence of the cameras that exposed them. Among his best known films are: “Ten Minutes Older” (1978), “The Last Day of Judgment” (1987) and “Once There Were Seven Simeons” (1989).
