Ori Gersht (born 1967, Tel Aviv) is an Israeli fine art photographer.
His father was one of the owners of a movie theater in Tel Aviv and Gersht took to film and photography from an early age. He studied photography and video at the University of Westminster in London (1992), and then at the Royal College of Art (Royal College of Art) in London, where he earned a Master's Degree in 1995. He then served as a professor of photography at the University of the Arts in Rochester, Kent, England. Gersht has exhibited widely in museums and galleries in Europe and the US since the early 1990s.
Gersht explores the boundaries of photography and challenges the limitations of technology, touching on basic issues concerning perception of optics and time, and the relationship between the photographic image and reality. Central themes in his works are a combination of aesthetics and destruction: destruction alongside beauty, or breathtaking destruction.
He filmed in Sarajevo, focusing on the signs of the destruction, and in schools in London, built on the ruins of buildings destroyed in World War II.
In his September 2008 exhibition "Fragments of Time", he presented 3 video works, based on still lives. The scene was broken abruptly by a dramatic scene in slow motion: a bullet piercing a pomegranate, a vase of flowers blowing apart. These works were the first to be exhibited in an art project in Times Square in March 2012 titled: "one Big Bang 1."
Gersht lives and works in London.
