Zvi Goldstein, Israeli, born Romania,1947
Zvi Goldstein was born in 1947 to Holocaust survivor parents in Cluj-Napoca, Romania. In 1958 he immigrated to Israel with his family who settled in Kiryat Gat. In 1964, he studied graphic design at the Bezalel Academy of Arts and Design, but his studies were terminated after about a year because of his military service. Between 1967 and 1969, he returned to Bezalel. During the Six-Day War he served in Gaza and the Sinai Peninsula. From 1970 to 1969 he traveled to Europe and the United States. Between the years 1969-1972 he studied art in Milan, Italy. In 1978 he returned to Israel and settled in Jerusalem. Because of his refusal to serve in the first Lebanese war, he served time in prison in 1983. In 2004 he saw his autobiographical book On Paper published, and in 2010, his poetry book Room 205.
In Goldstein's works there is an ongoing preoccupation with problems of knowledge, language and politics. At the end of the 1960s he began to act as a conceptual artist and towards the end of the seventies began to create works relating to the gap between Western modernism and the "Third World." His works contain geometric structures accompanied by critical texts.
