Lea Grundig (Anger), born in Germany, active in Germany and Palestine, 1907-1977
Lea Grundig was born in Dresden, Germany, in 1906, into a religious Jewish family. In her youth she was a member of the Blau Weiss Zionist youth movement. At the age of 16 she began studying at an art school in her hometown. She then moved to the Dresden Academy of Fine Arts. There, she met her husband, artist Hans Grundig. The couple were active in the Communist Party and in 1929 established the Association of Revolutionary Visual Artists of Germany (ASSO). In 1938 the couple were arrested by the Gestapo. In 1939 Leah was released and fled to Palestine via the "Pacific" immigrant ship. After the ship was seized, it was transferred to the Patria. After its explosion by the Haganah, Grundig was sent to the Atlit detention camp. After her liberation, in 1941 she settled in Haifa and then in Tel Aviv, where she continued to create and engage in illustration books. In 1949 she joined her husband in East Germany, where she was appointed professor at the Dresden Academy of Art. During her years of work she won many awards in East Germany, including the National Prize of the German Democratic Republic (1967). Between 1964 and 1970 she served as President of the Artists' Association.
Grundig's work is mainly in the field of drawing and graphics. In her work the Marxist humanist approach stands out. During her stay in the Land of Israel she created the series of works "In the Valley of Slaughter" (1942-1943) and also created illustrations for many children's books, such as "The Scatterbrain from Kfar Azar" (Am Oved, 1943), "Yotam the Magician" (Am Oved, 1944) (Dvir, 1947), etc. She also designed publications of the Communist Party of Palestine.
