Rabbi Shlomo Diskin was born in Grodno, in the Russian Empire (today Belarus) in 1846. His father, Abraham Diskin was a hazzan. In 1853, the family immigrated to the Land of Israel by the way of the city of Janow, Poland, from where the family name came. Alongside his Torah activities, he was also an accomplished artist. He did stone engravings on cups and goblets of bitumen stone and designed embroideries.
