Menachem Lemberger, Israeli painter, born in Poland, 1938-1992
Menachem Lemberger was born in Cracow, Poland to a Hasidic family. In 1942, his parents were murdered in Auschwitz. At the age of four, he wandered from ghetto to ghetto and through the woods with his grandmother, joining the partisans in Slovakia. In 1947, soldiers of the Hebrew Brigade took him to the Land of Israel, where he was placed in a Youth Aliyah school. When his grandmother arrived in 1949, they settled in the Manshiya neighborhood between Jaffa and Tel Aviv. Lemberger attended Takhkemoni elementary school and Rav Amiel Yeshiva. From the age of 15, he worked in diamond polishing. In 1962, he began to study art at the Avni Insitute in Tel Aviv, where he later taught.
Lemberger created minimalistic, geometric paintings in acrylic, figurative nudes, expressionist art and sculpture.
