Mordechai Levanon was born February 7, 1901 in Transylvania (now Romania). His father was a cantor and a synagogue officiary. He died October 20, 1968 in Jerusalem, Israel. He began painting as a child under the guidance of his brother who was a painter. In 1921, at the age of 20, he immigrated to Israel, and for the first five years of his life in Israel was a farm worker. In 1926 he studied in the first art studio opened in Tel Aviv and began working in the town as a plasterer. In 1929 he participated as a member of the "Massad" group of artists in this group's first collective exhibition in Tel Aviv. In 1937 he held his first solo exhibition in Tel Aviv, and from that year on took part in almost every annual collective exhibition of Israeli artists. He moved to Tel Aviv in 1925, to Jerusalem in 1938, and then joined the artists' community in Safed in 1963.
