Pamela Levy (Danman), Israeli, born United States, 1949-2004
Pamela Levy was born in 1949 in Fairfield, Iowa. Her family was Christian-Presbyterian. When she was 18 she married for the first time. In about 1972 she separated from her husband and moved to Santa Fe. Following a meeting with art critic Itamar Levy, she immigrated to Israel in 1976 and settled in Jerusalem. After her immigration, she converted to Judaism and married him. She made a living painting portraits. In 1990 she created CD covers for a collection of songs by Shlomo Artzi. In 2004 she died of cardiac arrest.
Levy's early works were created as collages of textiles and fabrics. In the 1980s she began to create oil paintings in a realistic style. Her works were based on photographs she created and contained complex compositions of human figures in different situations. Many of her works were influenced by the First Lebanon War or contained iconography related to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict and feminism. In addition to her work in painting, she also worked in the printing industry, especially with wood cutting.
