Esther Lurie, Israeli, born Russian Empire, 1913-1998.

Esther Lurie was born in Liepāja, Latvia, in 1913. She studied at the "Ezra" Hebrew day school in Riga. In her youth she began to study art. In the first half of the 1930s she studied art and design in Belgium. In 1934 she immigrated to Palestine. In addition to her work in art, she created backdrops for the Adloyada Purim Parade, the "Bialik Show" at Yarid Hamizrach (The Levant Fair) and the Theater. In 1939, during her stay in Europe, she traveled to Lithuania, where she ran into World War II. From 1941-1944 she lived in the Kovno ghetto and later in various labor camps. After the war she returned to Eretz Israel.

After the war, she published the sketchbook Jewesses in Slavery (1945) that she drew in the camp and was signed by publisher Yosef Shapira, and her main work was in the medium of drawing, focusing on landscape depictions, especially the landscape of the city of Jerusalem.
