David Ohanessian, born Ottoman Empire, active Palestine, 1884–1952.
David Ohanessian was born in a village in eastern Antalya (today Turkey) in 1884. During his childhood his family moved to the city of Eskişehir, near Kütahya. After the death of his father, around 1898, he moved to Kütahya and began to work in a ceramics studio. In 1908 he became the chief designer of the studio, which he bought together with several partners. In the studio he produced various kinds of ceramics, at the same time taking part in a large number of public works on the streets of the Ottoman Empire. Among other things, he produced ceramic tiles for the tomb of Sultan Rashid IV and the Central Post Office of Istanbul. In addition he took part in preservation and restoration of ceramic tiles at the Green Mosque in Bursa and a mosque in the city of Mecca. During WWI his house was commandeered, and he fled with his family and possessions to Halab, Syria.
In 1919 he was invited to Jerusalem to repair the tiles of the Dome of the Rock Mosque. This restoration was not successful, but Ohanessian settled in Jerusalem and founded a successful studio that produced vessels for practical use, decorative vessels, and many works for the Armenian community and for the British Mandate authorities. Among other works, he created walls at the American Colony Hotel (1923), at St. John of Jerusalem Eye Hospital (1929–1930), and at the Rockefeller Museum (1930s). In 1948 he emigrated from Jerusalem to Beirut.
Ohanessian is considered the father of Armenian ceramic art in Jerusalem. The works he created in his studio made use of traditional patterns from Iznik pottery, modified and adjusted to local culture. Ohanessian also added new motifs that originated in Jerusalem Armenian culture, such as a motif influenced by the 6th century “Bird Mosaic” and motifs based on the Dome of the Rock.
