Avshalom Okashi, Israeli, 1916-1980 Avshalom Okashi was born in Rishon Le Zion to a traditional Yemenite family. As a child, he was influenced by his grandfather, a silversmith. After his father's death he was sent to live with his uncle. At the age of 10, he was sent to the Meir Shefaya youth village where he studied art under Aryeh Elweil. In 1936, he became a member of Kibbutz Ayelet Hashahar. He worked as a shepherd and painted in his free time. At the time, he was in contact with Israeli artists Joseph Zaritsky and Arieh Aroch. In 1942, he returned to the youth village as a counsellor. In 1944-1947, he lived in Zichron Yaakov. He served in a patrol unit in Israel's War of Independence. In 1948 he moved into an old historic building in Akko. In 1948, Okashi was one of the founders of the New Horizons Group and took part in all its exhibits. His early work focused on landscapes and depictions of the Old City of Akko. In the 1960s, he painted a series of large-scale abstract works in which the dominant color was black. Okashi's home in Akko was turned into a museum. Died in 1980.
