Arie Orland, Israeli painter, 1887- 1954, born in Lithuania.
Arie Orland was born in Vilna to a religious family. He left home to study at the Odessa School of Fine Arts against the will of his parents. Refusing to accept financial assistance from them, he almost starved, but managed to graduate and received a medal for excellence. Later, he was the first Jew to be awarded a scholarship by Baron Ginzburg to study at the Royal Academy in St. Petersburg. After graduating in 1913, he was granted permission to travel around Russia to paint. In 1921, he immigrated to the Land of Israel. He exhibited his work at David's Tower in Jerusalem. He was one of the founders of the first art school in Tel Aviv and taught at Levinsky Teachers' Seminary. He won the Dizengoff Prize in 1942.
Orland worked in oil, watercolor and pastel. His style changed over time, from academic realism to paintings that veered increasingly towards impressionism and abstraction.
