Tamara Rikman, Israeli, born 1934
Tamara Rikman was born in Tel Aviv in 1934. When she was ten years old her father died. While serving in the army, she studied architecture at the Technion at night and participated in sculpture classes as well. From 1954-1962 she lived in the United States, where she studied art in New York, Boston, and Michigan, and married her first husband Yoram Golan. In 1963 she went to live in France with her second husband, the sculptor Lew Cohen, where she studied at L'École nationale supérieure des Arts Décoratifs in Paris, and studied metal casting with Chana Orloff. And she began to work with engraving. In 1964 she returned to Israel. With T. Carmi (Carmi Charney), her husband at the time, she wrote Tviyah (Prosecution) (Tarshish, 1967). And she also illustrated the book Mits Petel (Raspberry Juice) (Am Oved, 1970) by Chaya Shenhav. From 1966-1989 she lived in the Abu Tor neighborhood of Jerusalem. She currently lives in Tel Aviv.
Her early works, from the 1960s, were primarily pedagogical in nature. Her engravings from that period are primarily narrative in character. In the 1970s her work became limited, and she even began to work in steel and aluminum sculpture. In the 1980s she began to paint as well. Many of her works are of landscapes or broad spaces showing human images reduced to a series of lines and forms.
