Maurice Roth, Israeli painter, born in France, 1933

Maurice (Moshe) Roth was born in Nancy, France. In 1941, the family escaped to the south of France but the father was deported and murdered in Buchenwald. Roth and his brother were hidden in an attic on a farm in Lieoux. In 1943, he hid in a monastery under an assumed name. In 1944, he was smuggled to Spain with other Jewish children and sailed to the Land of Israel aboard the the S.S. Guinee under the auspices of Youth Aliyah. After his army service he studied at the Institute for Plastic Arts in Bat Yam. In 1965, he won a scholarship to study at the Beaux-Arts in Paris, France. In 1969-1970, he won a scholarship to study in Mexico under Paul Mendes. Roth's book, "L'enfant Coq," about his life and art, was published in 1998.
