Pnina Vertzel, Israeli, born in Poland, 1905-2005
Pnina Vertzel (Wurzel) was born in Krakow, Poland. She immigrated to the Land of Israel with her husband and children in 1936, initially settling in the Bat Yam area and then Petah Tikva. In Poland she studied at the Krakow Academy of Art, but only began painting again in her forties, after her children were grown. Vertzel painted portraits, landscapes and scenes from Jewish life in Poland. Her oils were mainly figurative, but she moved toward abstraction under the influence of Yehezkel Streichman. Vertzel continued to paint into her late nineties and died three months shy of her 100th birthday.
