Otte Wallish, an Israeli artist and graphic designer, was born in Sudetenland in 1903. In 1934 he immigrated to the Land of Israel and settled with his family in Herzlia, in a house that was designed in the Bauhaus style.
Wallish contributed to the symbolic self-representation of the Jewish state. He designed Israel's Declaration of Independence; Israel's first postage stamps; some of Israel's first coins, paper currency, and military medals; and the logos of food companies like Osem and Tnuva. Wallish planned and executed various stamp exhibitions in Israel and in countries and cities around the world.
During the 1930s and 1940s, Wallish worked on artistic arrangement, statistical graphs and other design aspects for books. In 1929, his own book was published, ABC: Ein Bilderbuch.
In 1936, Wallish set up a design studio in a building in Nahalat Binyamin, Tel Aviv, that since had been chosen as a national landmark. His design studio doubled as a kind of front for SHA'I, the Haganah's secret service.
Otte Wallish died in 1977.
