Neora Warshavsky, Israeli, born 1928
Neora Warshavsky was born in 1928 and grew up in Kiryat Haim. In the early 1950s she studied in the “New Bezalel” (Bezalel Academy of Arts and Design). From 1959–1987 she served as textile designer and production manager of the weaving department of “Maskit.” During this period she created a variety of woven fabrics in various materials. Among these were replicas of textiles discovered at the archaeological site of Nachal Hever (1963) and curtains for the Chagall Hall of the Knesset (1966). In 1972 she designed textiles for the hand-weaving industry in Ireland. In 1979 she served as consulting designer in a project for the Inter-American Development Bank in Guatemala. In addition to her work as a designer, she served from 1986–2004 as the Chair of the Israeli Association of Creative Arts and mounted design exhibitions. In 2014 she published a book, Neora Warshavsky: The Lucid Weaver.
Warshavsky’s textiles take their inspiration from the modernist Bauhaus tradition. In her work we see the use of a wide variety of structures in a broad spectrum of colors. Most of her work was created on hand looms composed of a basic structure of four warps and four to six pedals. Among her work are textiles for fashion designers such as Fini Leitersdorf, Gideon Oberson, Jerry Melitz, the House of Dior, Yves St. Laurent, Cardin, etc.
