Claire Yaniv, Israeli, born Iraq, 1921–2015
Claire Yaniv was born in Basra, Iraq, in 1921. In 1928 she made Aliyah to the Land of Israel with her family. She attended high school at “Gymnasia Herzliya,” where Israel Paldi taught painting. In the 1930s and the 1940s she studied painting with artists such as Steinhardt, Stematsky, and Streichman. In 1958 she went to Paris, France, for several months. In 1949 she was accepted into the Israeli Art Association. She was involved in the “Group of Ten,” and the activities of the Aklim Group in 1974, and in reaction to the Maalot disaster, went to live in the town of Maalot, where she founded painting groups. In 1976 she went to live in the Ein Hod Artists’ Village.
Yaniv’s style was influenced by European Modernism and by the “School of Paris” (“École de Paris”). She shows a striking expressiveness in her brush strokes and in her use of strong colors. In addition to periods of abstract painting, she also did figurative landscapes and portraits.
