Yihye Yemini, Israeli, born Yemen, 1896–1983
Yihye Yemini was born in 1896 in Sanaa, Yemen. During his childhood he studied in a Cheder and then in the Kol Israel Haverim school. He made Aliyah to the Land of Israel around 1898. In 1908 he began to study in the Silver Department at the Bezalel Academy of Art and Design, where he continued to work until 1917. He worked in the “Keter” Group under the management of Dubnow and Schneur, in the “Kav Lavan” Group (1920-1921) under the management of Strich, and in a group led by Shmuel Persov. He worked on the stone carving of the decorations for the YMCA building in Jerusalem. In 1924 he opened his own crafts studio on Hirschenberg Street in Jerusalem. In 1929 he was joined by his son, Yaacov Yemini.
Most of Yemini’s work was in the field of Judaica, using the technique of filigree work influenced by the Bezalel style of filigree design. Some of the pieces he produced were designed by Zev Raban.
