During the marriage ceremony, the bride from Cochin sat near the Torah ark in the synagogue, with her upper body concealed by a long veil hanging from the ceiling and only her beautifully embroidered skirt visible. The skirt could later be used to cover a coffin before burial and eventually might be donated to serve as the central part of a Torah ark curtain (parokhet).
